Many people will recognise the smell of Frankincense as its a common ingredient in incense. The name Frankincense comes from the French word franc meaning free, pure or abundant and the Latin word incensum, to kindle. So, this is a scent for kindling freedom, purity and a sense of abundance.
Both traditional uses and recent research shows it's helpful for skin, muscle and joint health. Extracts of have been shown to treat sun-damaged skin, which is likely why many people recommend it in facial serums and moisturisers for mature skin. Research has also lsooked at the impact of an extract of Frankincense essential oil on osteopathic knee pain and found it had a positive impact. Other studies have concluded it's safe to use and found for most controlled studies, adverse events were no more frequent with Boswellia extracts than with placebo, so you are unlikely to experience issues using it as long as you use low doses.
For me, however, the primary value of Frankincense essential oil is the emotional support I find it offers me in blends. After my father died suddenly, I did a lot of experimentation in creating blends that support people suffering from grief. Frankincense with Rose is sometimes called "a hug in a bottle" and, with other oils, can help you both connect with your grief and release and experience it as much as you are able. There were three that I found very helpful for relaxing while experiencing sadness and these are they:
