I am sure most people are familiar with ginger as a food and Ginger essential oil is made from the root that is used. Homely remedies, such as sliced with lemon and honey in hot water to treat a cold, or used to support digestion are two of the ways in which the essential oil can be used, however, there are many more.
For thousands of years, Ginger has been used for the treatment of numerous ailments, such as colds, nausea and vomiting, anxiety, arthritis, indigestion, migraines, and hypertension. The medicinal, chemical, and pharmacological properties of ginger have been extensively reviewed and shown the validity of these traditions. The antibacterial, antifungal, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, immunomodulatory, relaxant, warming effects of ginger essential oil have been confirmed in experimental and preclinical studies and its safety is well documented and it is generally regarded as safe.
In conclusion, it's safe to use, it's powerful and it can be used in many situations.
So, what do I like about it? Well, for me, it's handy a drop of it to a hot lemon and honey if I have run out of fresh ginger and am feeling run down. It can also help for colds when vaporized with oils like peppermint and lavender. However, the real value for me is as a relaxant. I have had issues with digestion and certainly muscle soreness and stress. It's often recommended to blend it with Juniper Berry and Rosemary to make a powerful muscle relaxant for massage which I have enjoyed. I also find a blend in a diffuser with Patchouli and Ylang Ylang is both uplifting and relaxing.
Uplifting Ginger Essential Oil Blend
Add the following essential oils to a 500ml water-based diffuser:
- 10 drops of Ginger
- 6 drops of Patchouli
- 4 drops of Ylang Ylang
However, for me, my current favorite use for Ginger essential oil is as a massage oil blended with two of my other favorite oils - Vetiver and Sweet Orange.
Relaxing Massage Blend
Add the following to a 30 ml bottle:
- 3 drops of Ginger
- 2 drops of Sweet Orange
- 1 drop of Vetiver
Then fill the bottle with 30 ml of jojoba carrier oil.
This blend grounds and centres me within myself (Vetiver), warms my muscles and lifts my spirits (Ginger) and brings carefree happiness and relaxation (Sweet Orange). I cannot recommend a blend more highly for deep relaxation and heart integration.
